The boys didn’t make it easy on themselves but after today’s hard fought win over rival Buranby Central, they have booked their ticket to provincials. They are the first Sr boys Soccer team in school history to do so.
On Oct 31st the Sr boys defeated a strong Central side 3-2 to take home the district banner. It was an emotional match to say the least, both teams experienced periods of sustained attack and defence. At one point Central had 6 corner kicks in a row, but the boys were strong defensively and withstood the onslaught.
The group took the momentum from the Central game into Nov 6ths contest against Sentinel, this time for a berth in the provincial championships. It was a game played in the true spirit of sport and unfortunately Sentinel pulled ahead in the final minuets. This meant that the boys would have to play the winner of Central v Hansworth.
The unenviable happened. Mountain would have to play the same Central side in order to advance to provincials. The game was tight all the way through and Central dominated possession. Burnaby Mountain was able to score and hold on to the 1-0 win. Coach Glenn Boyle and Frank Valente said this game was the teams “best victory of the season.” The defensive unit was immense with exceptional play all season from Nicholas Riccardi and Timothy Ellen. It took every player to play their role for the boys to achieve their goal.
Provincials are from Nov 22-24th at Burnaby Lake West. Good luck gentlemen
