“When it rains it pours.” This couldn’t be a more accurate description, of both the weather, and the banners that have poured into Mountain this fall.
It all started with the cross country teams, coached by Mr. Ryan. The junior girls, led by the strong running of Isabella Brunoro, took home the district banner and qualified for provincials through the zone meet. The senior boys followed suit, led by perennial, Kosta Adzic and new comer Martin Melsik, the boys took home the district and zone banners respectively, thus qualifying for provincials. The team sent 21 athletes to Nanaimo to compete in sloppy, wet conditions. Again Isabella Brunoro was a standout, finishing a team high 8th place in the province. The cross country team set the tone and the others teams followed closely behind.
The juvenile boy’s rugby team coached by Mr. Richardson, have brought rugby back to Mountain after a long hiatus. The team had a slow start to the season but gained momentum quickly through the play of their captains, Javin Higgins and Alex Rego. This team had great depth, as everyone on the team gained skill and knowledge of the game. Speedsters like Brandon Hsu, Carter Lin, Brendan Lim, and Haziq Daredia made many line breaks and were difference makers on the field. When it came to the banner game the boys had one mantra “do the little things right, and the result will take care of itself.” They certainly achieved this, as they tackled everything that moved and supported each other around the pitch. They were rewarded with the first juvenile boy’s rugby banner in school history.
Speaking of history, the senior boys’ soccer team, coached by Glenn Boyle and Frank Valente, made Burnaby Mountain history. They are the first senior boys’ soccer team to win the district banner and clinch a spot in the provincial tournament. They were able to do so with timely scoring and a solid defensive unit led by Tim Ellen. Their season continues Nov 22nd when they take on Royal Bay, Heritage Woods and Abbotsford in Group C pool play. The juvenile girls’ volleyball team, coached by Mr. Kinoshita and Mrs. Norris, had a great start to the season and an even better finish. The team was led by the consistent play of Jessica Rector, Kristen Young and Sarah Hartman. They finished the regular season in third place and battled through the district playoffs taking out, Moscrop, Burnaby South and Burnaby Central respectively to clinch the district banner. They had a tough V&D tournament but were still able to qualify for a provincial berth. The girls would go on to a well-deserved 9th place finish in the juvenile girl’s provincial tournament.
The junior boys’ volleyball team, coached by Stan Yuen, has been together since their grade 8 year. Each year this group of boys has brought home a district banner. This year was no different as they finished in first place after the regular season. The outstanding play of Kaedan Quan, Austin Ipince, and Anthony Perera was very noticeable, but each member of the team has played a significant role this season. In the district playoffs the boys were able to continue their winning ways against New West, and a very tough Moscrop, to take home yet another banner. The boys then went on to finish 3rd at V&D’s. They have secured a berth in the provincial tournament, which is to be played in Kamloops from Nov 22nd – 24th.
“When it rains it pours.” Mountain is fully behind the teams still in competition and we are all hoping for another rainy spell this winter! #GoLions #LionsPride
